If you’ve got yourself an air fryer, congratulations, you’re up for some mean meals that use very little cooking oil. Really, the results will surprise you. If you bought an air fryer but don’t use it often, do so! To help you get back on track, here’s a lovely recipe for chicken fried steak, beautifully golden and crisp, all thanks to the air fryer’s magic!
Here’s what you need to know. An air fryer works best with food that’s not too soggy or watery. This means you need to coat your chicken with breadcrumbs, and to make them stick, we’re using eggs and buttermilk.
We’re talking about the classic breading method of coating the food in flour, then soaking it in an egg mixture and finally covering it with breadcrumbs.
The main difference here is that we’re using an egg and buttercream mixture instead of just eggs, and we’re breading our chicken steaks with crushed cornflakes instead of plain breadcrumbs. This is as crispy as fried chicken gets!
If you don’t find store-bought cornflake breadcrumbs, make your own by filling a Ziplock bag with cornflakes and smashing them with a rolling pin. Alternatively, you can use Japanese panko bread crumbs or, if everything fails, plain breadcrumbs.
Did I mention you can totally customize your breadcrumbs? Mix them with dried herbs, like a fancy Herbs de Provence mixture of Italian seasonings to add another layer of flavor to the chicken steaks. You can also season the egg and buttermilk mixture, just add a pinch of salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste to take your dinner to another level. It’s that easy!
Then there’s using the air frier correctly. Set it up to high heat and air fry for 5 minutes on each side without overcrowding the basket. That’s about it! Serve these crispy chicken steaks with mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, and a thick, brown gravy for the most Southern-inspired comfort meal ever. Chicken steaks ready in minutes, and the result is delicious!
Preheat your air fryer to 400°F.
Pat your chicken steaks dry.
Combine the eggs and the buttermilk in a bowl and whisk. Combine the flour, salt and pepper in another bowl.
Coat the chicken in the flour, then in the eggs, and finally in the cornflakes.
Place gently in the air fryer. Repeat with all chicken pieces.
Air fry for 5 minutes, flip the chicken and air fry for 5 more minutes.
